Pediatric Genetics Program
The genetics program at Children's Village provides genetic counseling, testing, and medical genetics consultation for children and families with a variety of concerns. Our goal is to provide services locally to prevent having to travel to Seattle for these specialized services.
Genetic counselors are available at Children's Village full time. They talk with families about already known conditions and arrange specialized genetic testing as indicated. For children who do not yet have a diagnosis, the genetic counselors may arrange for medical genetics clinic with a genetics physician. Medical geneticists from Seattle Children's Hospital come to Children's Village about once a month.
At all genetics visits, a comprehensive family and medical history is taken and a physical examination is completed. Genetic testing is recommended for some conditions, but is not available or necessary for others.
Pediatric genetics involves working with families of children with a wide range of genetic conditions, including chromosomal disorders, single gene disorders and recognizable syndromes. Many times the child is the first in their family to have a genetic condition, for a variety of reasons.
